The Australian education system is divided into the University, Vocational and English language sectors.

  • University is the highest level of study in Australia. Students can study at the undergraduate level (Bachelor’s degree) or postgraduate level (Graduate Certificate, diploma, Masters, PhD).
  • Vocational institutions are closely linked with industries, making courses very practical and skill-based. Vocational Courses are provided at both the government funded and Further Education (TAFE) institutes and at private institutions. Many courses provide advanced standing into university degrees.
  • English language courses are undertaken for study, travel, immigration or business purposes. There are around 100 private English language centers in Australia. Some universities and TAFE institutes also offer English language courses.
  • Institutions will assess whether students meet the selection criteria set for their proposed course of study. They look into the level and content of the study a student has completed in their home country.
  • Undergraduate courses require an Australian Senior School Certificate of Education (Year 12) or the overseas equivalent of Australian high school matriculation, such as three passes at GCE A Levels in the appropriate subjects. Some courses may also have certain pre-requisite subjects. Postgraduate courses require satisfactory completion of a first degree at the undergraduate level. Confirmed research ability or relevant work experience may also be taken into consideration.

Students need to display a sufficient level of proficiency in the English language and must meet the minimum academic requirements to study in Australia when applying for a student visa. Australian educational institutions accept students having an appropriate level of English proficiency. Institutions set their own English language requirements and may have different IELTS entry levels for the proposed level of study than those required for a student visa.

  • An application for a Student visa can be filed in two ways; E-visa (Electronic Visa) & Paper visa. Students have to pay the Visa Application fee through Credit Card only (E-Lodgement) plus VFS charges OR when filing a Paper visa the student should pay VFS charges along with the Visa Application Fee.
  • Students need to submit;
    • Form 157A , Form 956, Form 1282,
    • Passport Copy of the Applicant (Bio data page, address page and any observation page [if applicable]) ,
    • 2 Passport size photographs,
    • All Educational Documents of the applicant along with the IELTS Score Card,
    • Declaration on affidavit from student,
    • Documents of Employment (Previous work experience or if the student is currently employed, please provide all documents),
    • Statement of Purpose and any supporting documents for the visa file.
  • Sponsors should submit an Affidavit of Sponsorship, Photo ID Proof (Election ID, Ration Card, PAN Card or Driving license), ITRs for the last three Years and Evidence of Income
  • Students should show funds according to the programme, subclass & assessment level they have selected, and Living Expenses – 20,290/- A$ per annum, Overseas Student Health Cover 300-350/- A$ per annum and Travel Expenses 2,000 A$.
  • Students find accommodation both on and off campus. Australia has a good standard of accommodation ranging from halls of residence, boarding schools, home stays and rented houses, apartments or rooms.
  • University accommodation: Most universities offer a variety of accommodation on or near the campus such as university apartments, residential colleges or halls of residence. Halls of Residence-cheaper and a popular option with full-time international students. Residential colleges-includes meals, library, computer access, sporting and social facilities. It is usually for full-time students and students are advised to apply early as these are usually high in demand
  • Homestay: Students live with a local family during the course of study. Students are welcomed into the home and accepted as a member of the family, participating in all daily routines of the family. Inclusive of food and electricity. (Mon-Fri breakfast and dinner, Sat & Sun three meals)
  • Shared / Rental accommodation: Students often share with fellow students and may have to provide their own furniture. Students usually advertise for rooms wanted or a room available in newspapers and notice boards on campus.

PART-TIME JOB
In order to work in Australia while a student, a student visa with work permission is necessary. Receiving the visa and work permission together saves both time and money. Students are permitted to work as soon as classes begin. Students studying in Australia under a student visa are allowed to work a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight during the term and unlimited hours when your course is not in session.

STAY BACK OPTIONS
Australia continues to have a demand for foreign workers, and students who have earned a degree in Australia have a special work visa category. There are also several other visa categories open to international students, and Australia has a very straightforward path to permanent residency using a points system. If one wants to stay and work after graduation, they must apply and obtain a work visa.
